Cold Rock Belconnen

Mick Unwin - Cold Rock Belconnen
"I think it’s a great franchise to join, Head Office has been a great support in helping me grow the business"~ Mick Unwin

Why did you choose to get into franchising? What were you doing prior?

I’ve always loved the thought of becoming my own boss; it wasn’t until my former business partner brought the first Cold Rock to Canberra that I thought about buying into the franchise with him. A year later we bought the Belconnen Cold Rock store.

Why Cold Rock?

It really reminds me of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and seeing all ages faces light up when they see the ice-cream selection and mix-in selection.

What does it take to operate a successful Cold Rock store?

A lot of time and dedication but with being a person who loves being their own boss, owning a Cold Rock store is a perfect match.

It is very important to set goals in your business plan, short term, medium term and long term.

I’m very future focused and with the support from Head Office I have been able to get a portable store up and running and a kitchen sink ice-cream eating challenge.

Has the training and support from Head Office met your expectations?

I think the training and support from Head Office is fantastic, they have agreed to a number of my requests particularly the portable store and the kitchen sink ice-cream eating challenge.

How has the Cold Rock experience been for you, has it met expectations?

It certainly has met my expectations.

Your advice to those thinking of joining the Cold Rock family?

I think it’s a great franchise to join, Head Office has been a great support in helping me grow the business.

Strangest request or funniest moment?

A great moment was when a customer ordered over 90 mix-ins.

Cold Rock North Lakes

James - Cold Rock North Lakes
"We like Cold Rock as the business is small, manageable & has very low wastage. We love that it is Australian, but above all that it is great tasting ice-cream! "~ James

Why did you choose to get into franchising? What were you doing prior?

James & I both worked in the cinema industry Birch Carroll and Coyle now known as Event Cinemas, and we loved the career path it provided into upper management. James and I knew from earlier days that we would like to invest our time & effort into something of our own. Cold Rock fits us perfectly, we each have our own particular skill to provide us with a great foundation for our small business.

Why Cold Rock?

Cold Rock is exciting, Cold Rock is fun & enjoyable. Your customers are always happy to be enjoying a great product, the concept is simple, and adaptable to your abilities. We like Cold Rock as the business is small, manageable & has very low wastage. We love that it is Australian, but above all that it is great tasting ice-cream!

What does it take to operate a successful Cold Rock store?

Time & patience are my two key points. Great service above all, take the opportunity to grow with your business, stay current with your local community. Keep your business new and exciting! James would say, market your business correctly & keep your overheads to a budget.

Has the training and support form Head Office met your expectations?

Cold Rock head office has the ability to train and educate all new business owners on the basic to starting your own franchise, the best part about Cold Rock is that all local stores are in business together, rather than against one another. We work together to brand our product! Having the support from not only head office but other Cold Rock owners is fantastic.

How has the Cold Rock experience been for you, has it met expectations?

The experience has been great, to think back to working for someone or under someone now brings a smile to our faces. Our hard work, comes back into our pocket.

Your advice to those thinking of joining the Cold Rock family?

Figure out your abilities as a person, are you up for a challenge? Are you able to commit yourself fully to a 12 hour, 7 day business? Work out your goals & expectations, figure out a system to make these achievable - Cold Rock is not a quick money maker, it’s a lifestyle change for the better! It’s hard work, but has to be one of the most entertaining jobs, it never seems to get dull.

Strangest request or funniest moment?
